photo images & yes, this is Kirsten writing a diary again...all her views
are not necessarily those of the board but she does try to impose them on the
rest of the crew whenever the opportunity arises.
ACTIVITY abounds at the park this time of year!
Softball games between rival churches, girls lacrosse, picnics in the
pavilion, children and adults on bikes, swiftly approaching rollerbladers,
babies in stroller and toddlers learning to walk. PLEASE, as you drive
into the lots and park, be very careful during the hectic spring and summer
pace the great weather brings to the park. Reminder: the large
lot is for team practice, long term visits to the park and parties in the
pavilion. The small lot nearer the barn is for brief visits to the park
and the barnyard. There are lines now painted in the small lot and you
are asked to stay within those lines and not park beyond them for everyone's
safety. 2 sets of lines are blue for handicap accessibility, please
respect those who need these spots and leave them open. There is NO
parking along either side of the drive at the main entrance, on the grassy
areas or in front of the barn or sugar shack. These guidelines are for
everyone's safety!
THE RABBITS ARE IN THE HOUSE! or Rabbitat,
or Bunny Bellagio, or Rabbit Townhouse...whatever you want to call the cool
new digs Clay designed and built with the help of Eddie, Sandy and
others. When you're at the park, take a look and say "Hi" to
our furry friends.
- RABBITAT is in place! Thursday, May 1 and to see more photos
from today (May 6) go to Photos/Rabbitat page - It's almost done. FOB
Volunteer Clay Ruck is working hard alongside Eddie. Many thanks to
some Quinnipiac students who helped Clay, Tom, Vin & Eddie get it
from inside the barn to the front of the barn.

- "Boo-Boo" is spotted cavorting with "Pickles"
the Dragon during Hamden's Earth Day Celebration in April.
- The MUTT MITT Program is HERE!. For all you dog-lovers out
there and for the rest of us who can't have one because "someone"
in their house is allergic and for those who don't want them but respect the
love you have for your dogs (truly they do!), Friends of Brooksvale has
donated 2 Mutt Mitt Holders to the park and one has been mounted on the main
kiosk near the Sugar Shack and Toddler Play Area. See photo
above. The 2nd will be mounted at another location soon.
Dog-Lovers, Brooksvale is the only town owned park which allows dogs (on-leash
of course) but we do expect you to clean up after your favorite
canine. The bags are degradable and there are numerous trash bins in
the park to dispose of them. Since sometimes you forget the plastic
grocery bags from home, we thought this would help you out. And now,
we really need your help. The refills for these holders are NOT
covered by any town fund. FOB will continue to purchase them and
provide them at your "disposal" (ha-ha!) as donations allow.
If you love them, if you want them, please DONATE. A case of 800 costs
$65.75. Mail a check in any amount with a note that says "Mutt
Mitts" to FOB, Inc. 524 Brooksvale Avenue, Hamden, CT 06518 and we'll
make sure we keep the dispensers filled.
If you ARE looking for a place where you can run your dog off-leash, there
is a wonderful Dog Park on the corner of Ridge Rd. and Waite St. in Hamden
near Bassett Park. For more info. visit www.hamdenrdog.org
- April 25, 2008 - BEARS & COYOTES with Paul Rego was wonderful. Did you
know a female bear with cubs is called a Sow? Did you know that her
offspring stay with her that first year and den with her that winter?
Can you imagine 2 children close to a 100 pounds each in your bed for an
entire winter? Coyotes are back in CT too and though they look bigger due to a
full coat in winter they rarely reach more than 40 pounds. Their noses
are more narrow, their paw prints too and, very interestingly their tails, a
bushy bottle-brush tail as it's called most often is kept at a lower than
horizontal angle, much different than dogs. Got to our "Links"
page to learn more.

- The Friends of Brooksvale donated 3 BROCHURE HOLDERS to the
park. The two weather resistant ones hold three brochures each and are
located on the large wooden kiosks at the park. One near the sugar
shack and one at the trail head, up the hill past the barn a bit. The
indoor one is well...indoors at the Veterans' Memorial Building and holds
four brochures. We and the park staff will do our best to keep them filled
with "Friends" brochures, Brooksvale Trail Maps and other such
informative publications through the year. Thank-you to all the
FRIENDS who donated generously so we can do things such as this to better
the park. Even the little things count!
